In Response to Amy Porterfield Levy, Mother, writer, and environmental activist regarding her Blog posted on the Huff Post on 11/03/2015 10:19 am EST:

Amy,

As an environmental activist, you should be aware that homeopathy is a green medicine. Not only is its safety record exponentially superior to that of conventional medicine, but also from “soup to nuts” it is a far cleaner and less environmentally toxic form of treatment. Conventional medicines (used according to the “standard of care”) are responsible for more than 100,000 deaths annually in the US alone. According to testimony provided directly to the FDA by the Poison Control Centers of America, homeopathy is extremely safe.

Your statement that homeopathy sounds “just like witchcraft” is, sadly, an opinion bereft of fact. Your comparison of homeopathy and witchcraft harkens us back to a time in our national history when ignorance and superstition were wielded as weapons of oppression. Accusations of witchcraft tend to reflect more on the educational status of the accuser rather than on the merits of the accused. (Remember that the terms “witch” and “witchcraft” were historically used as propaganda to destroy those who were hated and feared out of ignorance.) Branding a practice “witchcraft” is a time-honored method of inciting fear and irrational behavior instead of utilizing reason, logic and science. Is this really the argument that you wish to employ?

The US FDA is currently engaged in the process of re-evaluating their policies and regulatory activities with regard to over the counter (OTC) homeopathic medicines. These policies are not perfect, but no policies ever are. The FDA is not questioning the efficacy of homeopathic medicine in general, nor are they conducting a “witch hunt”, which you seem to be advocating.

In the past, the FDA has acted swiftly to remove certain products from the market if they have not been in compliance with the Homeopathic Pharmacopeia of the United States (HPUS). The use of “homeopathic shark cartilage” may be one of those products requiring attention, since shark cartilage has not been registered by the HPUS nor am I aware of any homeopathic physicians who utilize it.

Homeopathy has a robust 200-year (plus) history of worldwide use. It is an integral part of the public health services of many nations (most of whom happen to have far superior health indices and outcomes than we have here in the US). Could these differences be purely the result of coincidence or does the use of homeopathy by these nations possibly contribute to the outcome benefits?

Epidemiologists have looked into these questions, and a recent Swiss study concluded that homeopathy does contribute to improvements in public health. Study after study (using randomized placebo controlled double blinded state of the art trials) and meta-analyses of homeopathic treatment in all human age groups, in animals, in agriculture and in the laboratory, demonstrate the effectiveness of homeopathy over placebo, but “skeptics” (sometimes paid and unpaid representatives of the pharmaceutical industry) all seem to get lost in a witch hunt of propaganda and distraction similar to yours.

Even when studies result in unequivocally positive results in favor of homeopathy, they are met with denial and skepticism rather than an admission that there might be a system of medicine that works, even thought we don’t understand why.

Study after study has found homeopathy to be safe, and frequently more effective than conventional medical polypharmacy in the treatment of numerous acute and chronic health conditions. This work has been verified through large and small investigations throughout the world. Yet the US scientific community remains silent. Why is that?

Homeopathic OTC medicines (just like their conventional counterparts) are meant to be used only in “self-limited, and non-life threatening conditions”. Individuals living with cancer and other serious illnesses should always strive to educate themselves and to research all their medicines and supplements (not just the alternative ones). Serious, life-threatening conditions should always be managed in consultation with skilled, trained and licensed homeopathic (and conventional) health care providers, who are experts in their fields.

You may believe that “as far as I'm concerned, homeopathy falls into the same category as all unproven supplements and herbal "medicine"”, but this statement belies the fact that you have failed to familiarize yourself with the existing science of homeopathy. You may believe that it is much easier to remain ignorant of the facts and of the science of homeopathy than it is to dig a little deeper beyond the rhetoric, and actually to look at the data.

The science of homeopathy is extensive, and there are many well designed studies demonstrating its effectiveness, safety and (at times) superiority to conventional care for a number of medical conditions, acute and chronic. For a partial list of these studies, see the American Institute of Homeopathy (AIH) website (www.homeopathyusa.org).

Incidentally, the AIH is the oldest extant national medical association in the United States, founded three years prior to the American Medical Association (AMA). The AIH is an organization of licensed homeopathic health care providers (MD’s, DO’s, ND’s, PA’s, Dentists, Veterinarians, Nurses, Pharmacists, etc.) who have studied homeopathy and have learned to utilize it effectively and scientifically. These health care professionals, and most of the studies and case reports published worldwide vouch fairly for homeopathy’s benefits and risks.

Any persons dealing with serious illness, seeking alternative care, should seek the professional assistance of a well-trained homeopathic physician rather than relying on self-medication, propaganda and misinformation.

Amy Porterfield Levy is at Twitter:

She also runs an own web-site:

where there is an article against homeopathy:

"Homeopathy: Dead Sharks and Hufflepuff Meds"
http://ecomodernistmom.org/2015/11/01/homeopathy-dead-sharks-and-hufflepuff-meds/

That is a follow-up of this article:

Amy,

That is a lie. Homeopathy is not "green" and it is no medicine. Homeopathy is only poisoning people.

That is a lie. [1] Killing time and money, poisoning patients, is BY FAR  not superior to effective treatments. Homeopathy is not effective. It is a fraud.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[*/QUOTE*]

That is a lie. [2] A great number of "homeopathic remedies" contain very dangerous chemicals, mercury compounds being some of the ones used very often AND used in high concentrations. The same is true for arsenic. Cases of death were caused by such poisons.

Here is an arsenic poisoning mentioned:

Here is about mercury in homeopathic remedies:

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[*/QUOTE*]

That is a lie. [3] "Conventional" medicines DO HAVE pharmaceutical properties, and, because of this, these properties can cause adverse reactions, which in most cases is NOT the fault of the medicine, but caused by a mistake by the medical doctor applying it.

The claim, that homeopathy is "extremely safe", is a lie, because it ignores the neglect done to the patients.

Your statement that homeopathy sounds “just like witchcraft” is, sadly, an opinion bereft of fact.

Here is an in depth analysis of what REALLY was done in Switzerland:

Postscript

01 November 2013

Some six months after we published this and after more articles by homeopathists lauding this ‘Swiss Government Report’ as the last word on the scientific evidence for homeopathy, an official of the Swiss Government wrote to the Swiss Medical Weekly to correct many of their errors.

It was then that we realised that we couldn’t trust homeopaths to even get the title of the report correct. As Felix Gurtner of the Federal Office of Public Health FOPH, Health and Accident Insurance Directorate in Bern, Switzerland, had to point out:

[***QUOTE***]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
This review was declared to be an HTA by the authors (the final PEK [5] report does not classify the literature reviews as HTA reports) and published later as a book [7] under their responsibility without any consent of the Swiss government or administration. [Original reference numbers]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[***/QUOTE***]

So now we know: their ‘book’ wasn’t an HTA after all, just a biased and limited ‘literature review’ that was not even published by the Swiss Government or with their permission.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[*/QUOTE*]

That is a lie. [16] If it is a state of the art study, then is shows that homeopathy does NOT work.

It is one more lie: by writing "Study after study", Ronald D. Whitmont claims that and endless row of studies one after the other showed that homeopathy is effective. No, it is not. Most of the studies are utter crap and the figures are forged, made up or the study design was made to lead to the wrong result of homeopathy being effective.

[*QUOTE*]
---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
Even when studies result in unequivocally positive results in favor of homeopathy, they are met with denial and skepticism rather than an admission that there might be a system of medicine that works, even thought we don’t understand why.

[*QUOTE*]

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------

Homeopathic OTC medicines (just like their conventional counterparts) are meant to be used only in “self-limited, and non-life threatening conditions”.

---------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
[*/QUOTE*]

This is several lies. [21]  One is the pro domo pushing towards people should go to licensed (WATCH IT!) homeopaths. But homeopaths, as can be seen with Ronald D. Whitmont as an example, are stupid nuts, and rotten liars. With respect to scientific medicine they are insanely ignorant frauds.

frequent claim made by measles vaccine advocates is that the vaccine saves lives, but deaths from measles declined to near zero before the measles immunization program was even started. Claims made by vaccine advocates are simply not based in scientific reality. Data from the Historical Statistics of the United States clearly illustrates this fact.[25]

Bonus Question: What form of therapy do you recommend for chronic LD?

I recommend Classical Homeopathic Medicine for chronic LD.  Classical homeopathy is a system of medicine that relies on the prescription of one single medicine at a time.  This prescription is based on a thorough interview with the individual patient and takes into consideration the entire psycho-somatic totality of symptoms that are present in each individual.  There is not one single homeopathic medicine for LD.  Any homeopathic medicine can be effective in LD if it matches the appropriate symptoms of the particular individual in question.

Microorganisms tend to evolve resistance to antibiotics in proportion to the length of exposure to these agents. Lyme disease is no exception5,6. Resistance does not develop to classical homeopathic treatment, however, and its efficacy does not diminish with use over time. Therefore, homeopathy may be the most viable alternative treatment for use in Lyme disease and other infectious illnesses.

Homeopathic Treatment
The cornerstone of homeopathic medical treatment is understanding the way in which the illness manifests itself through changes in a particular individual’s health. The history provides the foundation with which to understand the individual patient, making it possible to comprehend how the disease manifesting in each given case constitutes a change from that person’s pre-morbid state.

The classical homeopathic prescription is based, not on the diagnosis of Lyme disease per se, but on this personalized understanding of the characteristic form of disease expression in that individual host; the particular way this individual has departed from his or her own pre-morbid normalcy.

Understanding this point is critical, since it marks the divergence of homeopathy from conventional allopathic treatment. One cannot practice homeopathy effectively or be true to homeopathic principles if one fails to utilize this methodology.

Classical homeopathic treatment of Lyme disease can only be undertaken after a thorough analysis of an individual who is affected by a disturbance in their health. Since illness manifests uniquely in each individual, effective treatment must follow the same guidelines.
